Darcy Padilla

Photographe américaine basée à San Francisco, Darcy Padilla s’inscrit dans la tradition de la photographie sociale et documentaire.

Elle photographie les sans-abris, les toxicos, les marginaux. Elle devient « commise d’office auprès des pauvres » comme la définit Emmanuel Carrère, écrivain, scénariste et réalisateur français.
De 1993 à 2011, Darcy Padilla a suivi et photographié la vie de Julie, aujourd’hui disparue. Jeune femme atteinte du sida, elle vivait seule dans une extrême pauvreté puis est devenue mère de deux enfants que Darcy accompagne désormais… Pour ce travail exceptionnel « Julie 1993-2010 », elle a reçu plusieurs prix dont le W. Eugene Smith de la photographie humanitaire, le John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation et, le Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography en 2010, puis un World Press Photo en 2011.
